Appleの共同設立者の一人であるスティーブ・ジョブズ氏は、多くの起業を志す人々に影響を与えています。

人々を魅了する彼のプレゼンテーションや、紡ぎ出される言葉は多くの人の知るところです。

今回紹介するスピーチは、2005年6月12日に行われた、アップルコンピュータ社およびピクサー・アニメーション・スタジオ社のCEOであるスティーブ・ジョブズ氏によるスタンフォード大学における卒業式のスピーチをまとめたものです。

その言葉には人生に関する多くの示唆を含み、その言葉に触れる度に私は自分を奮い立たせ挑戦し続ける事が出来ます。

有名なスピーチの一つですが、今までその言葉に知り得る機会が無かった方に改めて彼の言葉を伝えることが出来たのであれば、私自身も嬉しく思います。

世界で最も優れた大学のひとつであるこのスタンフォード大学の卒業式において皆さんとご一緒出来る事を光栄に思います。私は大学を卒業したことがありません。実を言うと、今日が人生において大学の卒業式に一番近い日なのです。今日は私の人生から3つのお話をしたいと思います。それだけです、大したことはありません。ただ3つの物語です。

1つ目の話は、「点と点を結ぶ」です。

私はリード大学を最初の半年で退学しました、しかし本当に大学を去るまでの1年半は大学に残り続けていました。では何故学校を辞めたのでしょうか?
それは、私が生まれる前から始まっていました。私の生みの母は若い未婚の大学院生でした、彼女は決心をして私を養子に出す事にしました。彼女は「大学を卒業した人に育ててもらいたい」と強く思っていたので、私が生まれた時には弁護士夫婦に養子縁組されることがすべて決まっていました。しかし私が生まれた時、その弁護士の夫婦は土壇場で「どうしても女の子がいい」と言い出したのです。そうして養子縁組の順番待ちをしていた私の育ての親に、夜中に電話がかかってきたのです。"思いがけず養子にできる男の子が生まれましたが、引き受けますか?" 。彼らはこう答えました「もちろん」と。
その後、生みの母親は私の母が大学を卒業しておらず父は高校も卒業していない事を知り、生みの母親は養子縁組の書類にサインすることを拒否しました。数ヵ月後、私の両親が私を大学に行かせると約束した事で、生みの母はサインに応じました。

そして17年後、私は大学に行きました。しかし世間知らずな私がスタンフォード大学と同じくらい学費の高い大学を選んだ為、労働者階級の両親の蓄えはすべて私の学費へ注ぎ込まれる事になりました。半年経ちましたが、私は大学にその犠牲に見合うだけの価値を見出す事が出来ませんでした。私は自分の人生で何をしたいのか分からず、またそれを見つける為に大学がどうのように役立つのか分かりませんでした。しかも、両親が一生をかけて貯めたお金を私は浪費しているだけでした。そこで私はすべてがうまくいくことを信じて退学をすることにしました。その時はとても怖かったのですが、今思えば最高の決断の一つでした。退学をしたので興味のない必修科目の講義を受ける必要がなくなり、自分の興味があった講義を受けることが出来るようになったのです。

すべて良い事ばかりではありませんでした。私には寮の部屋が無く、友達の部屋の床で寝たりしました。コーラの瓶を返却して得た5セントで食べ物を買ったり、美味しい食事を取る為に毎週日曜日の夜には約11Kmの道のりを歩いてハレ・クリシュナ寺院に行ったりしました。それでも私は楽しくやってました、そして好奇心と直感に従って偶然見つけたものは、後になってとても貴重なものとなりました。それでは一つの例を挙げましょう。

当時のリード大学では、おそらく全米で最も優れたカリグラフィー(西洋や中東における文字を美しく見せる為の手法)の授業が行われていました。キャンパス中のポスターや引き出しのラベルには、すべて手書きの美しいカリグラフィーが描かれていました。中退した私は、通常の授業を受ける必要がなかったので、カリグラフィーの授業を受けて、その方法を学ぶことにしたのです。セリフ体やサンセリフ体の書体における、文字の組み合わせや隙間の調整の仕方、そして優れたタイポグラフィ(文字のデザイン)について何が優れているのかを学びました。それは美しく、歴史的で、科学では捉えられない芸術的な繊細さがあり、私はそれに魅力を感じました。

しかし、当時はこれらの事が私の人生において何か役に立つとは考えてもいませんでした。しかし10年後、最初のMacintosh(マッキントッシュ)コンピュータを設計しているときに、これらの出来事が思い出されたのです。そして、そのすべてをMacに反映させたのです。美しい文字デザインを備えた最初のコンピューターです。もし私が大学のあの講義に参加していなかったら、Macに多様で美しいデザインのフォントが搭載されることはなかったでしょう。また、WindowsはMacをコピーしただけなので、パソコンにそれらの美しい文字が搭載されることもなかったでしょう。もし私が退学を決心していなければ、このカリグラフィーの授業にも参加していなかったでしょうし、パソコンにはあのような素晴らしい文字デザインは存在しなかったかもしれません。もちろん大学時代には前(未来)を向いて「点と点を結ぶ」事は予想だにしませんでした。しかし10年後、それはとても明確なものとして(過去を)振り返る事が出来ます。

繰り返しになりますが、前(未来)を向いて点と点を結ぶ事は出来ません、後ろ(過去)を振り向いた時にしか点と点を結ぶ事は出来ないのです。だから、あなたは未来に点と点が結ばれる事を信じるしかないのです。自分の直感、運命、人生、カルマ(宿命)など、何かを信じなければなりません。この方法は私をがっかりさせた事はありませんし、私の人生に大きな違いをもたらしました。


私の2つ目の話は、「愛と喪失」についてです。

私は幸運にも、人生の早い段階で自分が夢中になれる事を見つけられました。共同設立者のウォズニアックと私は、私が20歳のときに両親のガレージでアップルを立ち上げました。私達は懸命に働き、10年後にはガレージに2人だけだったアップルは4000人以上の従業員を抱える20億ドル規模の企業に成長しました。私たちの最高傑作であるMacintoshを発売して1年後、私が30歳になった時に会社を解雇されたのです。どうやったら自分で立ち上げた会社からクビになるのでしょうか(笑)。

Appleが成長するにつれ、私が非常に優秀だと思った人(スカリー:ペプシコーラ事業担当社長)を雇って一緒に会社を運営するようになり、最初の1年ほどはうまくいっていました。しかし、将来のビジョンが食い違い始め、最終的には仲違いしてしまいました。その際、取締役会は彼(スカリー)を支持しました。それで、30歳のときに私はAppleを追い出され、それは周りにも知られる事となりました。大人になってからずっと情熱を注いでいた物を喪失してしまったので、とてもショックでした。

数ヶ月間は本当にどうしたらいいのかわかりませんでした。先輩の起業家を失望させてしまったと感じました、渡してくれたバトンを落としてしまったと感じたのです。デイビッド・パッカードやボブ・ノイスに会って、大失敗したことを謝罪しました。私の失敗は周知の事実であり、シリコンバレーから逃げ出そうとも考えました。しかし私はゆっくりとですが何かを感じ始めました、私はまだ自分の仕事を愛していたのです。アップル社での出来事があっても、この点は少しも変わりませんでした。拒絶されましたが、私はまだ仕事を愛していたのです。だから私は再出発をする事を決意しました。

その時は分かりませんでしたが、アップル社を解雇されたことは私にとってとても幸運だったのです。自身は失ってしまいましたが、成功したことによる重苦しさが、初心者に戻った事で気軽になりました。アップルを離れた事で、私は人生で最もクリエイティブな時期を迎えることができました。

その後の5年間で、私はNeXT社とPixar(ピクサー)社を立ち上げ、後に妻となる素晴らしい女性と恋に落ちました。ピクサーは、世界初のコンピュータアニメーション長編映画「トイ・ストーリー」を制作し、現在では世界で最も成功しているアニメーションスタジオとなっています。Apple社がNeXT社を買収し、私はApple社に戻りました。NeXT社で開発した技術は、Apple社の復興への礎となっています。そしてローリーンと私には素晴らしい家族を得る事が出来ました。

私がアップル社を追い出されていなければ、今の私の立場は無かったでしょう。良薬は口に苦しでとても苦い経験だが、その当時の私には必要だったのでしょう。人生にはレンガで頭を殴られるような出来事もありますが、どうかあなたの信念を失わないでください。私が続けて来られるのは、自分の仕事を愛していたからだと確信しています。自分の好きなことを見つけなければなりません。そしてそれは、あなたの仕事に対しても、あなたの恋人に対しても同じです。仕事は人生の大部分を占めます、あなたが本当に満たされる為には自分が素晴らしいと信じる仕事をするしかありません。そして素晴らしい仕事をするための唯一の方法は、自分の仕事を心より愛することなのです。まだ見つけていないのであれば、探し続けてください。立ち止まってはいけません。感情がそうであるように、あなたが素晴らしい仕事に出会えた時、あなたはその事を恋をした時のように気付くはずです。そして、その関係は年を重ねるごとにどんどん良くなっていくものです。だから、見つかるまで探し続けてください。Don't settle.(立ち止まってはいけません)。


3つ目の話は「死」についてです。

私が17歳の時、このような言葉に出会いました。"一日一日を最後の日のように生きれば、いつの日か必ずその通りになる"。その言葉が印象に残っていて、それ以来33年間、毎朝鏡を見て自分に問いかけています。「今日が人生最後の日だとしたら、今日やろうとしていることをやりたいだろうか?」と。そして、その答えが何日も連続して "No "であったとき、私は何かを変えなければならないと分かるのです。

自分がもうすぐ死ぬということを覚えておく事は、人生の大きな選択をするための最も重要な判断材料となるでしょう。なぜなら、外部からの期待、プライド、恥ずかしい思いや失敗への恐れ等、ほとんど全ての事が死の前には崩れ去り、本当に大切なものだけが残るからです。自分が死ぬということを意識する事は、失うものがあると考えてしまう罠を避ける為の、私の知る限り最善の方法です。私たちは最初から何も持っていないのです、自分の心に従わないとする理由はありません。

約1年前、私は癌と診断されました。朝の7時半に検査を受けたところ、膵臓に腫瘍があることがはっきりとわかりました。私は膵臓が何であるかさえ知りませんでした。医師からは「不治の病であることは間違いない」「余命は3〜6カ月」と言われました。主治医からは「家に帰って身辺整理をしなさい」と言われましたが、これは医者の言葉で「死に支度をしなさい」という意味です。それは10年をかけて子供達に伝えようと思っていた事を、わずか数ヶ月で伝えなさいという事です。家族が出来るだけ楽になるように、すべての身支度をしておくという事です。それは「さよなら」を伝えておきなさいということです。

私はその一日中とこの診断結果と向き合いました。その日の夜、私は生体組織診断を受けました。内視鏡を喉から胃そして腸へと通し、膵臓に針を刺して、腫瘍から数個の細胞を採取しました。私は鎮静剤を投与されていましたが、その場にいた妻によると、細胞を顕微鏡で見たときに医師が叫び声をあげたそうです。それは手術で治る非常に稀な膵臓癌であることが判明したからです。私は手術を受けて、幸いな事に今は元気です。

これまでで最も目の前まで死が近づいた時でしたが、今後数十年はこれ以上近くに来て欲しくはありません。「死」が純粋に知的な概念であった頃に比べて、それを体験したからこそ私は少しだけ確信を持って皆さんに伝えられる事もあります。

「死」を望む人は誰もいないのです。天国に行きたいと思っている人も、そこに行く為に死にたい訳ではありません。それでも「死」は私たち全てが行き着く先であり、誰一人としてそこから逃れられた人はいません。なぜならそれはそうあるべきだからです。死はおそらく生命の作り出したかけがえのない発明だからです。それはすべての物事に変化をもたらすものです。「死」は古きを取り除き、新しきへの道を開きます。まさに今、新しきはあなたなのです。しかしそう遠くない内に、あなた方もまた徐々に古きになり取り除かれる事となります。大げさな言い方で申し訳ありませんが、これは真実なのです。

あなたの時間は限られているのだから、他人の人生を生きることで無駄にしないでほしい。ドグマ(他人の考えた結果に合わせて生きること)に囚われてはいけません。他人の意見に惑わされて、自分の心の声をかき消さないようにしましょう。そして何よりも大切なのは、自分の心と直感に従う勇気を持つことです。あなたが本当になりたいものは、あなた自身が知っているのです。他の事は二の次で良いのです。

私が若い頃「The Whole Earth Catalog」という素晴らしい本があり、私の世代のバイブルのひとつでした。近郊のメンローパークに住むスチュワート・ブランドという人物が作ったもので、彼は詩的なタッチでこの本に命を吹き込みました。1960年代後半、まだパソコンが普及していない時代でしたから、タイプライターやハサミ、ポラロイドカメラなどを使って作られていました。それは、Googleが登場する35年前の文庫本版Googleのようなもので、理想主義的で、素晴らしい手法や概念に溢れていました。

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5 - deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation -the Macintosh- a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma -which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.
